Walks in Watercolor

Cows seem to be on my mind lately. Or shall I say, on my watercolor paper. My husband and I just returned from a lovely mini-break in Brienz, Switzerland, where we took the steam rack railway, built in 1892, all the way up to the Brienzer Rothorn located in the Emmental Alps at 2350 meters above sea level.

Can you spot the steam rack railway?

The weather, although a little on the warmer side, was perfect for hiking. We decided to descend on foot to the Mittelstation (middle station) for about two and a half hours and ride the rest of the way down. The view was breathtaking. Every now and then we passed grazing cows that didn’t seem at all disturbed by our presence.

If you ever get a chance to visit Switzerland, I can highly recommend this outing. But be prepared for some serious muscle pain should you decide to do the hike. I hope you enjoyed this post and wish you lots of joy with your painting projects. — Laureen

  4. It looks like water colour seems to have more intense colours than gouache or maybe it’s just the way I paint or my earthy subjects.
    Also I love all your titles, I really struggle with naming my artworks. This is something I know I have to work on.

    1. Hi Chris. I have very little experience painting with gouache. But I did read that gouache is more opaque. The reason for the color intensity is probably due to the fact that I paint exclusively with transparent, single pigment watercolors. They let the white of the paper shine through more than opaque watercolors. Let me know if you would like to know more about painting with this medium. Happy to help. I’m glad you like the titles!

      1. Thank you for the offer but at the moment I’ll play around with gouache a little longer there is still loads more to learn with this medium yet.
        I guess watercolour will always be brighter then if using good quality paper.
